  29.    This diskette (or self extracting .exe file) contains
  30.    drivers and programs for Windows 3.1 users who have a
  31.    Sound Blaster Pro or Sound Blaster Pro Basic.
  32.  
  33.    If you obtained the drivers and programs mentioned in
  34.    this file as a .EXE file from a bulletin board, please
  35.    unzip the contents into an empty directory or onto a
  36.    formatted diskette before following the installation
  37.    instructions.

  77. III. Installing the drivers
  78. ---------------------------

  80.    1. Start Windows v3.1.
  81.  
  82.    2. Open the Control Panel and select the Drivers icon.
  83.  
  84.    3. You should have the following driver names in the
  85.       Installed Drivers list:
  86.  
  87.             MIDI Mapper
  88.             Timer
  89.             [MCI] CD Audio          ;this is only for
  90.                                      owners of CD-ROM drives
  91.             [MCI] MIDI Sequencer
  92.             [MCI] Sound
  93.  
  94.       If you have other drivers installed, please remove
  95.       them with the REMOVE button and restart Windows before
  96.       continuing.  If any of these drivers are not listed,
  97.       please add them before continuing.  (See your
  98.       Windows manual for details on adding these drivers.)
  99.       Make sure you restart Windows after making changes to
  100.       the driver list.
  101.  
  102.    4. Click on the ADD button.
  103.  
  104.    5. Select Unlisted or Updated driver and click on OK.
  105.  
  106.    6. Insert the floppy containing the drivers.
  107.  
  108.    7. Type in the drive letter of the floppy drive 
  109.       containing the driver disk.
  110.  
  111.    8. Select Sound Blaster Pro Auxiliary Audio and click on
  112.       OK.
  113.  
  114.    9. Windows will prompt you for the Sound Blaster I/O
  115.       address.  The default I/O address is 220H.  If you 
  116.       have changed the jumper on your card to 240H, then
  117.       select 240H.
  118.  
  119.   10. Windows will ask if you want to restart your system.  
  120.       Click on DON'T RESTART, then repeat steps 4, 5, 6, 
  121.       and 7.
  122.  
  123.   WARNING! - Steps 11 and 12 will OVERWRITE your existing 
  124.       MIDIMAP.CFG configuration.  If you want to keep your
  125.       existing configuration, click on CANCEL and make a 
  126.       copy of MIDIMAP.CFG before continuing the installation
  127.       process.

  129.   11. Select Sound Blaster Pro MIDI Synthesizer and click
  130.       on OK.
  131.  
  132.   12. Windows will ask if you want to use the current 
  133.       MIDIMAP.CFG or install the new MIDIMAP.CFG - Select
  134.       NEW and continue on.
  135.  
  136.   13. Windows will prompt you for the Sound Blaster I/O
  137.       address. Repeat the instructions in step 9.
  138.  
  139.   14. Windows will ask if you want to restart your system.  
  140.       Click on DO NOT RESTART, then repeat steps 4, 5, 6,
  141.       and 7.
  142.  
  143.   15. Select Sound Blaster Pro Wave and MIDI and click on
  144.       OK.
  145.  
  146.   16. Windows will prompt you for the Sound Blaster I/O
  147.       address, Interrupt, and DMA channel. Choose the 
  148.       settings your card is set to and continue on.
  149.  
  150.   17. Windows will ask if you want to restart your system.  
  151.       Click on RESTART.  Windows will then restart.
  152.  
  153.   18. Two additional Windows applications are provided.  
  154.       They are MMJBOX.EXE and MMCBOX.EXE, please copy them
  155.       into your Windows directory.
  156.  
  157. IV. What to do if the drivers don't install correctly
  158. -----------------------------------------------------
  159.  
  160.    If you are having problems installing the drivers, here
  161.    are some things to check.  Also, be sure to read the 
  162.    "Important Notes" section below.
  163.  
  164. ** 1. If you installed Windows 3.1 using the "Express 
  165.       Installation,"  Windows scanned your hard disk for
  166.       programs to be installed.  As a result, older 
  167.       versions of the Chatterbox, Jukebox, and Mixer were
  168.       installed if they were on your hard disk at the time
  169.       of installation.  Please remove these icons.  To do
  170.       this, click on the icon once to select it, then press
  171.       the delete key.  Windows will ask you for confirmation.
  172.       Repeat for each icon.
  173.  
  174.    2. Check the size and date of all the driver files in the
  175.       Windows SYSTEM directory against the listing in the 
  176.       section "Diskette/.EXE Contents".  Make sure that the
  177.       correct drivers have been copied to your hard disk.
  178.  
  179.    3. Open the Driver applet in Control panel.  You should at
  180.       least have the following driver names in the Installed
  181.       Drivers list:
  182.  
  183.             Creative Sound Blaster Pro Auxiliary Audio
  184.             Creative Sound Blaster Pro MIDI Synthesizer
  185.             Creative Sound Blaster Pro Wave and MIDI
  186.             MIDI Mapper
  187.             Timer
  188.             [MCI] CD Audio          ;this is only for owners
  189.                                      of CD-ROM drives
  190.             [MCI] MIDI Sequencer
  191.             [MCI] Sound
  192.  
  193.       If one or more of these drivers do not exist, you must
  194.       install the driver(s) using the Driver applet in Control 
  195.       Panel (See the Windows manual for more details).
  196.  
  197.    4. Check your SYSTEM.INI by choosing RUN from the File menu
  198.       of the Program Manager, and typing SYSEDIT in the command
  199.       line box.  Examine the [drivers] and [sndblst.drv] 
  200.       sections.  They should look something like
  201.       this:

  216.    5. If Windows won't install a device driver or you get the
  217.       error message "Device not found" when playing a Wave or
  218.       MIDI file or a CD, be sure you have the following settings
  219.       in the [mci] section of SYSTEM.INI
  220.  
  221.               [mci]
  222.               WaveAudio=mciwave.drv
  223.               Sequencer=mciseq.drv
  224.               CDAudio=mcicda.drv    ;this is only for owners 
  225.                                      of CD-ROM drives
  226.  
  227.       If one or more of these do not exist, you must install 
  228.       the driver(s) using the Driver applet in Control Panel 
  229.       (See the Windows manual for instructions).  Do not type
  230.       in the entries into the SYSTEM.INI because the files have 
  231.       to be installed into your SYSTEM directory by Windows.

  234. V. If you upgraded from Windows 3.0 to Windows 3.1
  235. --------------------------------------------------
  236.  
  237.    If you upgraded an existing copy of Windows 3.0 or Windows 
  238.    3.0 with Multimedia Extensions to Windows 3.1, here are some 
  239.    special notes to consider.
  240.  
  241.    1. If you have a line which reads "device=vsbd.386" in the
  242.       [386Enh] section of SYSTEM.INI, please delete it.  This
  243.       is an old driver which has been replaced by VSBPD.386.  
  244.       The new driver will not work correctly until this
  245.       line is removed.
  246.  
  247.    2. Delete the file SBPMIXER.CPL in the Windows SYSTEM 
  248.       directory.  It is no longer being supported.  The new 
  249.       SBPMIXER.EXE is now used instead and is loaded 
  250.       automatically when you install the Sound Blaster drivers.
  251.  
  252.    3. After installing Windows 3.1, verify that the latest 
  253.       SBPMIXER.EXE,  MMCBOX.EXE, MMJBOX.EXE, SBPFM.DRV, 
  254.       SBPAUX.DRV and SBPSND.DRV have been copied to your hard 
  255.       disk.  Check the size and date of these files against
  256.       the listing in the section "Diskette Contents".  You can 
  257.       delete any older versions that you find in your system.

  260. VI. Important notes
  261. -------------------

  264.                           * * * * * * * * * * * * *
  265.  
  266.    1. The drivers that are included with the Windows 3.1 
  267.       Resource Kit are not the lastest drivers and may not 
  268.       work properly.  Please do not use them.
  269.  
  270.    2. We are including drivers that make use of Device 
  271.       Virtualization.  These drivers will allow DOS Apps 
  272.       that use the Sound Blaster to run in Enhanced Mode.
  273.  
  274.       Please make sure that a line reading 
  275.       "device=vsbpd.386" exists under the [386Enh] section
  276.       in your SYSTEM.INI.  If you have a line which reads
  277.       "device=vsbd.386", please delete it.  Also, make sure
  278.       the file VSBPD.386 is in your Windows SYSTEM directory.  
  279.       If it is not, copy it from the Drivers Disk. 
  280.  
  281.    3. The Windows 3.1 drivers can now be used in both Windows
  282.       3.0 with Multimedia extensions as well as Windows 3.1.  
  283.       They will check the Windows version and use the correct 
  284.       Sound Blaster section name to access the settings in the 
  285.       SYSTEM.INI.
  286.  
  287.    4. A MIDI-MAP has been created to make use of the 
  288.       SBPFM.DRV, please use the MIDI MAPPER icon under Control 
  289.       Panel to customize it to your requirements.
  290.  
  291.       Under Windows 3.1, MIDI channel 10 is referenced as the
  292.       drum channel.  If you are having problems with the FM 
  293.       synth not sounding "right", try modifying the 
  294.       configuration with the MIDI Mapper.
  295.
